Business Energy Questions – Is saving money important to your business?

Is saving money important to your business?

It would appear that not all businesses are actually keen to save! Astonishing really. They are too busy in their pursuit to ‘make’ money, yet sweep under the carpet their business overheads until it’s often too late to make decent savings. Those niggly bills that come around but once a year, requiring time and effort in dealing with them. We concur, we empathise with you. They are a nuisance, it does take time to find the best deals, however, given a little time and effort, you can make substantial savings. Don’t sweep this overhead under the carpet, face up to it and act now!

Of course in my line of work I would say this. I am an energy broker, or intermediary if you like, helping to facilitate the process of attaining the best energy rates possible. If you aren’t prepared to do it then I will take on board the role of your energy manager. Not only this, but I will make sure of the following:

  • Prevent you from rolling onto ‘out-of-contract’ rates at renewal time.
  • Find out what your current contract situation is (if indeed you’re in a contract).
  • Find out current tariff rates and annual consumptions.
  • If you don’t know who your supplier is, I can find this out.
  • Help with the process of installing a new meter (even a Smart or Half Hourly meter).
  • Resolve issues with your energy supplier.
  • Put you in contact with associated partners, who can help review and improve your energy efficiency, the aim being to lower your consumption and ultimately your expenditure.
  • Provide communications throughout to keep you informed and up to date.

Yes, we do undertake these tasks for our clients where and when required. Many simply don’t have the time or knowledge to deal with it and would rather outsource to someone such as myself, who will take the hassle away from them, yet work for them and with them.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do you know how much energy your business consumes per year?
  2. Do you know how much you spend per year?
  3. Do you know how to reduce your energy consumption?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of these questions, then our response would be ‘we can find this out, let us help you’. This is what we do, this is what we are here for. When renewing your energy contracts, what’s important for you and your business in terms of your energy supplier requirements?

I suspect that for many, the top priority is price. The lowest price possible, I know that’s what I would certainly want. I also suspect that quality of service would be a distant second…perhaps. If you’ve previously had bad experience of a particular supplier, then you’ll want to switch away from them, making sure that you review customer ratings of the other energy suppliers, for their customer satisfaction levels. But how about considering the other requirements too.

One of our new services for tendering, is to provide you with a ‘Reverse Auction’ bidding process. This is a fairly new approach to procuring your energy rates, but one in which:

Energy Bill Rates Check – We help you to pay less

Ever picked up the paper or listened to the news and heard them talk about how Mr & Mrs. Jones were overcharged £1000 for the gas and electricity? It happens quite often!

There may well be a certain ‘spin’ on it by the media, but customers are paying more than they could be, if they only took the time to review their bills. This is the problem though, they don’t always have the time, they can’t get their head around the bill and consequently, neglect it, thereby paying higher rates.

We’ve all been there haven’t we? We receive our utility or insurance bill and fling it to one side. If you do this with an energy bill, you will miss the cut off notification date and they’ll simply roll you onto that higher rate tariff, which you cannot get out of. Not until the next renewal date.

Mr & Mrs Jones may be paying £1000 more than they need to, because they didn’t act on their renewal letter or the energy company has made a mistake with their bill. Either way, don’t just leave it, there is assistance.

Turning down the business gas but keeping business electricity on full!

So a lot of small businesses have been enjoying the mini heatwave – it can’t last, can it? Although many are able to reduce their energy consumption for others it’s a case of turning it up..if you’re making ice cream that is and a few other thirst quenchers for the hot weather!

Even if it is warm outside health and safety will want to make sure that your workers are working in offices and factories that are temperature controlled – so many offices nowadys have windows that cannot be opened so the air conditioning is on permanently. Okay for those that have motion sensitive sensors they have an element of control but for many businesses there is stil a need to be careful about how much energy is being wasted.

It’s not just offices and factories either that are in danger, many retail outlets have similar issues – do you ever look up in supermarkets and large stores and wonder how much energy a business is wasting heating their roof space? Well for businesses in this environment it is a big concern and so it is prudent to take all possible measures to reduce those business energy bills for switching off unnecessary lights and equipment to insulation and use of solar power, where viable.

One of the most important things a busines can do though is to check their bills and tariffs and visit an business energy price comparison site to see if they are truly getting the best deal. Using an independent broker can save a company a lot of money and stress as these companies will help you through the termination and contract set up and keep a watchful eye on your business electricity and business gas contracts in the future also ensuring that you are always on the best possible rates.

Energy rates will continue to rise, what can we do?

With energy rates currently on the rise, it all seems like doom and gloom. Not necessarily!

We should be shopping around for the best deal, as we do for insurance. By doing this, we can obtain better rates than simply staying with the existing supplier.

By allowing specialist brokers to work for you, your time is freed up to concentrate on your main business where you will be more productive. We can navigate around the problems that are all too common, time-consuming and confusing.

What else can be done to keep our costs down? Quite simply, we need to manage and adjust our energy usage habits. Often these can be fairly basic practices, U-GET can advise with this.

Monitoring your energy usage, pin-pointing trends and anomalies and acting on this is the way forward. Smart meters are being introduced with the perception that this will cure our ineffective routine and reduce bills – not if we do nothing with our data. A simple and effective procedure is to use an Energy Monitor, clipping the transmitter to our meter and sending information to the monitor, with the data able to be viewed on your pc.

We can do something to help reduce our costs, in business and at home, even in a rising market. However, we need to take a pro-active approach to it.

Do you understand your energy bills?

Person confused about billsConfusing energy bills could stop you getting the best deal.

From a recent Which? magazine article of the same title, they highlight the fact that many of us either don’t understand our energy bills and tariffs or find it confusing, that they spend so much time reading through it, just to make sense of it – eventually.

Are the energy companies doing this on purpose, a sort of conspiracy theory? In the hope that you or I will receive our renewal letter and think to yourself:

“I’m just going to stick with them because I really do not have the time or inclination to trawl through the bill to make ‘head nor tail’ of it?”

Perhaps! Either way, we as the consumer lose out. Do nothing and pay more than need be. Spend time understanding the bill and searching for better rates, you are assigning a lot of time, some might say ‘wasteful time’ in your quest for improved rates.

I have been in this position as well, both domestically and commercially. Trying to fathom my home electricity bill – economy 10. Would it be better for me to switch to economy 7? What are the pro’s and con’s of this? Who do I call and will I go from option to option before eventually speaking with another human, by which time you’ve assigned half an hour of your life to listening to what is now, rather irritating music.

Try sorting it yourself, to keep on top of it, which is admirable, then you will probably want to compile a spreadsheet. Noting your current rates, consumption levels, new rates from current supplier then from competitors. Once more, you’ve spent time on this task.

And then once you think that you have sorted it, you decide to try the suppliers once more, in the hope that you can re-negotiate the rates.

So how long has all this taken? A morning, a whole day perhaps. Either way, it’s time that you could and would have liked to of spent in some other way. Ok, so you may have saved yourself £££’s, but you feel drained. I know, I have been there. I’ve done this for businesses too. I would say that it’s not fun, but actually, I do enjoy the challenge, the fact finding, the analysis, yes, sometimes it isn’t as straight forward as you may think. But that’s for another time.

So what can you do? Ideally, as Which? are campaigning for, is to have our bills simplified. That’s a start. However, do you still want to spend all this time searching for the best rate? I’m certain that you don’t. There are sites and business that can do this for you and yes, it is often FREE. They won’t charge to look through your bill and find you a new rate or a selection of rates for you to choose from.

Domestically, the comparison sites do this for you, with some basic data entry from yourself. For business energy, it’s similar, however, there are companies such as U-GET that simply require a copy of a bill and a ‘letter of authority’ to begin the process. What we can provide, is the human element, helping resolve your problems; not knowing who a supplier may be when moving into a new shop or building, needing someone to check your bill as you believe it maybe incorrect.

We know that it’s confusing as well as time-consuming. When you have a business to run, this is something that you simply do not want to deal with. Allowing energy brokers and consultants to act on your behalf is a convenient and hassle free solution. Using the various suppliers to source rates and tariffs from means that we are independent and impartial, not favouring any one.
